On October 13, Canadian singer-songwriter, Daniel Caesar, hosted a surprise pop-up concert in Atlanta, Georgia. Just a few short hours after the concert was announced, the event would ultimately be shut down by authorities after just two songs in.
Around 1 pm, the R&B soul artist took to social media, telling fans in an Instagram story, “Atlanta somewhere downtown around 4 pm. Location coming soon.”
Two hours later, Caesar posted on his Instagram page, revealing Piedmont Park as the concert location. Within the hour, hundreds of fans, including many college students from Morehouse, Spelman, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Clark Atlanta University, Kennesaw, Emory, SCAD Atlanta, and even University of Georgia, swarmed the park in anticipation of Caesar’s performance. Amongst the massive crowd of fans were Eva Doomes and Avery Simpson, both juniors at Spelman College.
“I think the crowd was peaceful, but people were definitely pushing, and I can see why it got shut down.” Doomes said. “There were only like five security guards, with little security measures and no one was listening to them.”
Simpson, a longtime fan of Caesar’s music, also adds that because there were no seats, it was on a first-come, first serve to get a good view, with fans even taking to trash dumpsters and trees just to get a good look.
“I felt like everybody was just there to be quiet and listen to his music and sing along and enjoy so I felt like it was a nice peaceful environment, which is why I ended up being really frustrated when it got shut down” said Simpson.
Many fans were also expecting an appearance by Grammy-Award winning hip-hop artist, Tyler the Creator, as he was seen in Caesar’s Instagram story post, leading fans to believe that the two would be performing together, given their close friendship.

However, after Caesar managed to perform just two songs, the pop-up concert would soon be abruptly shut down by Atlanta police. Tyler was disappointedly absent, as fans were quickly proven wrong about his alleged pop-up appearance.
“I think fans ran with the hype, but I also think that he probably did know that (Tyler) would draw more people to it.” said Doomes.
“I also understand the fan reaction like jumping to conclusions because you just never know like a lot of artists in Atlanta do surprises all the time.” Simpson said.
The concert comes as a part of a sudden string of spontaneous appearances by Caesar, who previously hosted another pop-up event in Houston, Texas, that was also shut down shortly after.
“I feel like artists can still do pop-up concerts, but the celebrities themselves also need to be aware of the amount of fans they draw in, which can turn chaotic but controlled, ” said Landon Scott, a junior at Morehouse College, who was also among the crowd of fans. “It’s also enjoyable for us, because it’s like you get to experience the adrenaline that they have producing the music that we enjoy on a day to day basis.”
Authorities later released a statement that Caesar did not have an approved permit to perform at Piedmont. “This event was not authorized or permitted through the City’s official event application process, which is in place to ensure public safety and proper park management. APD responded to ensure public safety and dispersed the crowd in an orderly manner,” the statement said.
Officials with Parks and Recreation asked that anyone who wants to hold an event at a city park to be sure to apply for a special event permit “to ensure compliance and safety for all attendees.”
Daniel Caesar is known for his major hit songs, such as “Japanese Denim,” “Get You,” and “Best Part,” among many others.
